Rooster

Mom had said that unless the rooster's crowing wakes her up at night we can keep him. Well, in the past few days he has been cornering Angel and pecking and well, attacking her. A rooster should NOT act this way. When it happens Angel will screech out this awful noise and afterwords she keeps trembling till she falls completely asleep. Samson will be leaving, anyone want an abusive rooster, anyone?

I have some pictures of them on their coop at night.

I am so angry my rooster will not and I mean not go into the coop tonight. Usually when I mp in. But not tonight i actually went inside and back out and he was in the coop as I usually do I snuck up then ran to close but not now. As I ran he jumped out. I went in and told my mom then she said, "Blog about it then try again" that is what I am doing now. oh. How I could smash his head if I had half a brain.

Update

...so I admit: Delila's new name is Samson. He struts around the yard with an air of importance, like he knows hes being written about on the web. His attempts at crowing are so cute and I'll be sad to see him leave our home. My #1 fan Shaman has been sending in chicken and duck jokes. They are sooooooo funny. Thanks Shaman. Here's a duck joke from moi.

Q. What's the difference between George Washington and a duck?
A. A duck has a bill on his face, but George Washington has his face on a bill! fa.

Poll Results

The controversial debate on whether or not Delila is a rooster has been a big thing in our house. I think that even though 97% of you think she is a rooster, I beg to differ. I mean, What do you really know about chickens anyway? Huh? But I owe respect to you all so I guess it's a possibility. I must respect my own wishes to though, so I'm just waiting for a cock-a-doodle-doo, Or most likely a farm fresh egg laid by Delila.

Update

My chickens are growing so fast. I think Delila is a meat chicken, mom thinks Delila is a Samson. Tip of the day, Retrievers+Chickens=trouble. My sweet lab tried to bite of Telula's head. Our Shih Tzu plays with them and chases them though. Our coop is very small so our chickens roam around during the day. They always huddle together bye the coop around 10 p.m. and that's my sign to put them away. Delila has a huge red comb and she is very fast. The others have small combs and generally are easy to catch. I think they are being very good exterminators. And they hide their poop which I very much appreciate.

Update

Hello. Yesterday we got the coop we ordered from E bay. The listing said, assembly: 6 easy steps, takes minutes to assemble. My dad worked on it 2 hours last night and it still isn't finished. It is also very small, I think it would work best for 2 chickens according to my research, Oh well. It's not awful. I am learning each chickens personality. Delila is fast and larger than the others. She is always begging me to go outside so she can stretch. Petunia is quiet and the others push her around a bunch. And Telula is the queen bee (queen chick?)She has first dibs on everything and she pecks the others all she wants. Oh, I love my little girls!

International Respect for Chickens Day

Today is my day. my special day. Sara at school didn't believe there was such a holiday, but I persisted and now she believes me. I drew a chicken on the white board at school where we put announcements and wrote, "Happy International Respect for Chickens Day!!!!!" I also wrote a poem and read it to the class:

"You see, chickens are my friends,
Well I guess that depends,
I must admit they are quite yummy,
But killing them is just so crummy,
And they're just sooo sweet,
Why use them for meat?
I guess all that I can say is,
Chickens are my friends.

update

Hey! Sorry I haven't checked with you guys in a while. We now have a 75 watt bulb in with the chicks because 60 wasn't enough. Delila, our Buff Orpington chick, Is noticeably heavier than the others-not that I'm sayings she's heavy. Also her wing feathers are many and large, she has cute little tail feathers tinier than you could imagine. I was takings the chicks out for a romp a few minutes ago and Delila safely flew out of my hand and landed. I was so proud. Mom is in awe as well. I hope you all marked your calendars for tomorrow, it's National Respect for chickens day. A great holiday. I'm excited, yea.

FRIDAY!!!

It is the best day ever. here's why:
1. We are going on a field trip to skateport
2. We're gonna watch the Waltons for the first time
3. Chickens
4. Chickens.

Dad picked me up early and I chose 3 adorable chicks. You can tell the 2 Rhode Island Reds apart because Telula has a darker head. Petunia is in my lap as we speak. Chick little is going crazy over hers (I didn't tell her that it's the loudest one!) It's raining and hailing like crazy and I was scared on the drive home. We used a cooler for the brooder and pine pellets for bedding. Our food is Purina chick starter and we are using a 40 watt bulb to warm them. So far all is well, the brooder is in the garage, mom hates their wiggly feet.

Answers

My dear commenters asked me some questions, here are your answers. Scott, there are over 600 hundred chicken breeds, and they range in size and color. Our breeds are fairly standard. By the way, some breeds lay blue and green eggs!(" I do not like green eggs and ham...") Tee Hee. Tribute to Dr. Suess. I will train them to come when I call them. Also, Angel is too feisty to be near the chicks right now. Angel is at the top of this post!

Why I made this blog:

A little more than a year ago I didn't know anything about Chickens. I didn't even know about the different breeds! Then I picked up my mom's issue of Wonder Time, and there was an intriguing story about a family who raised chickens. Something about it caught my eye and that evening my dad and I talked about them for hours while he did some plumbing. So, when mom tucked me in bed that night I asked her the question, "Mommy, I know this sounds kinda weird but...can we get chickens?" We were living in a duplex at the time but my mom said that someday we could. I was trilled, I became the chicken expert. If there was a library book about them I had read it 4 times. I looked at every word on every chicken website, if I saw ANYTHING with an egg or a chick/chicken on the cover I devoured it. After a while I got caught up in other things. But when this school year started I was obsessed more than ever. In my class I am the chicken kid. Jokes are pointed toward me frequently, I don't mind at all. Once again though I slumped off my obsession. We were in a new house with a barn and acreage, and even though I was still the chicken girl, my family got a new puppy and I felt my parents forgot their last year promise. Finally, yesterday, girl in my class(who we will call Sara) and her mom brought in 12 chick eggs an incubator and 3 duckling eggs.A brooder too. They caused a distraction in the class but I loved watching the delicate squirmy things peck out of their eggs. One problem-they found a farm to take 9 chicks, but that left 3 homeless. i got home and talked to my parents earnestly, I was on my hands and knees. Dad had always wanted them, but mom said, "No more than 2, also, I'm not gonna have anything to do with them" so she e-mailed my teacher. Today my teacher said that the other chick needed a home, so she e-mailed my mom and gave her a guilt trip. My mom agreed. I'm ecstatic! My dream is coming true. Sara said I get first dibs, and on Friday I'm choosing them all and they're coming home! This blog will tell of my first experience with poultry.
